The Master of Teaching is a postgraduate award in initial teacher education, fully accredited by the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) and Tertiary Education Quality Standards Agency (TEQSA).

The ACCS Master of Teaching program is comprised of 19 subjects including two Professional Experience placements and is intended for graduates of a relevant Bachelor or Master’s degree per the admissions requirements stated below.

Underpinned by an inclusive Christian worldview that accommodates diversity, the Master of Teaching program prepares you for the rich, relational, and significant role of teacher so that you are ready to make a difference in your students’ lives – individually and for the common good. The program emphasizes educational good practice and is designed to develop the insight, knowledge and skills required for high quality learning and teaching.

The degree contains two streams: Primary and Secondary, with a common core of foundational units including pedagogical studies and professional experience units.

Stream 1 – Primary. This includes six Key Learning Areas: English, Human Society and its Environment, Mathematics, Science and Technology, PD/H/PE, and Creative Arts.

Stream 2 – Secondary. This enables you to study two areas of teaching specialization associated with your undergraduate degree. The areas offered are English, Mathematics, Ancient History, Modern History, Studies of Religion and Science.

Course Load

• 2 years (4 semesters) full-time study, or part-time equivalent.
• Each subject requires 12 hours of study per week including lectures, readings and assignments.

Entry Requirements:

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor’s degree or equivalent that meets the content requirements for the intended teaching area or areas. Also:
• English proficiency.
• A copy of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) result (only applicable to those whose first language is not English). IELTS of 7.5 overall (with minimum 7.0 in Reading, 7.0 in Writing, 8.0 in Listening, 8.0 in Speaking) or equivalent.

Additional Entry Requirements for Primary Stream:

• In addition, students completing a Master of Teaching (Primary) must have:
• achieved at least a Band 4 or equivalent result in a prior HSC Mathematics course, or
• undertaken at least 0.125 EFTSL (1 unit) of mathematics/numeracy in the prior bachelor degree or equivalent qualification, or
• pass a bridging unit that is benchmarked to a Band 4 HSC result and addresses the discipline-specific knowledge requirements for primary mathematics/numeracy.

Additional Entry Requirements for Secondary Stream:

• A major and a minor specialization area in the following secondary teaching areas: English, Ancient History, Modern History (students are required to have completed at least one unit of Ancient or Medieval History), Mathematics, Studies in Religion and Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

Mandatory Requirements:

Working with Children Check (or state/territory equivalent)
• Students are required to hold a valid Working With Children Check (WWCC) or state/territory equivalent.

Anaphylaxis and Child Protection Certificates
• Students are required to complete anaphylaxis and child protection training. Certificate updates are also required.

Note: Working with Children Check (or state/territory equivalent), Anaphylaxis and Child Protection Certificates must be provided prior to any Professional Experience placement.

Literacy and Numeracy Tests (LANTITE)
• All students need to successfully pass the Australian Council for Educational Research Literacy and Numeracy tests (LANTITE) to be eligible to apply for their Professional Experience placement in their final year.
• ACCS requires students undertake the test in semester one in the first year of study.

Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA)
• The TPA assesses the student against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at Graduate level.
• The TPA is conducted during the final professional experience placement and is a requirement for graduation.

Note: states and territories may have additional requirements for teacher education students undertaking a professional experience placement.
